MANUALE APPENA RICEVUTO  IN INGLESE DEL CEFALY L?IMPAGINAZIONE FA SCHIFO MA MEGLI CHE NIENTE, L'HO COPIATO DA PDF RICEVUTO

1. WELL-BEING
The Cefaly® is a medical device that is
designed to treat headaches and stress. It
may, however, be used by everyone, without
restriction, for the profound sense of
well-being that it induces. A state of deep
relaxation and an unprecedented sense of
well-being are generated through deep
muscle relaxation and a marked increase in
endorphin secretion.
2. STRESS
The Cefaly® is able to substantially reduce
or prevent stress and the anxiety that is
frequently associated with it. A major
anti-stress technique is used to prevent a
stress episode during the day or to provide
immediate relief for a state of stress
that already exists.
3. HEADACHES, MIGRAINES
AND FACIAL PAIN
Cefaly® is designed to prevent and treat
chronic or recurrent headaches, i.e. headaches
that occur regularly. However, if
you experience an acute headache, i.e. an
unusual headache that is sudden in onset,
you must not use the Cefaly® and should
seek medical advice instead. We emphasise
the importance of seeking medical
advice if the headache is of recent origin or
is unusual in nature.

FRANCAIS
INDICATIONS
Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES/GB:Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES 24/06/08 10:47 Page 31
The Cefaly® is beneficial when the pain is
located in the front half of the skull.
However, Cefaly® has no proven benefit
when the pain is located at the back of
the skull or in the lower part of the face
(below the eyes). .
Headaches come in many different guises
with innumerable causes and it is outside
the scope of this manual to consider all of
these variations. We will consequently
confine ourselves to the most common
types: tension headache, migraine, cluster
headache, sinusitis and trigeminal neuralgia.
Tension headache
The tension headache is the most common
headache. It occurs in up to 30% of the
population and is triggered by stress and
anxiety. It affects twice as many women
as men.
The pain is usually bilateral, non-pulsating,
but is frequently described as a tightness
or pressure, like a tight hatband. It is not
exacerbated by physical activity and is
not accompanied by vomiting or visual
disturbances.
The bouts of pain increase in frequency
if painkillers are used excessively or
inappropriately: the headache may then
become an almost daily occurrence.
The Cefaly® is consequently of particular
relevance to this indication since it enables
the chronic medication that is
responsible for numerous side effects be
reduced, replaced or even discontinued.
32
ENGLISH
Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES/GB:Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES 24/06/08 10:47 Page 32
Programme 1 is designed to treat an
attack, i.e. a bout of pain. It is applied
when the headache is already present,
preferably, when the first signs of the next
headache are experienced. It may be
repeated several times in succession
during the bout of pain.
Programme 2 is designed to act as a
prophylaxis. However, when tensio
headaches are immediately preceded by
an acute state of stress, programme 3 will
also be beneficial as a prophylaxis. Its
anti-stress and relaxing action alleviates
the main factor that causes tension
headaches.
Migraine
Migraine occurs in up to 12% of the population
and it affects three times as many women
as men. The pain is frequently unilateral,
severe, pulsated and aggravated by physical
exertion. It is often accompanied by nausea
and vomiting with acute sensitivity
to noise and light (phonophobia and
photophobia).
In the majority of cases (9 in 10), the
migraine is simple, i.e. the symptoms are
confined to those described above.
However, in 1 in 10 cases, ,the migraine is
preceded by an aura, i.e. neurological
disorders, such as tingling sensations in a
particular part of the body or, more
frequently, a blind spot (scotoma) in the
visual field. This is termed “ophthalmic
migraine”.
Migraine usually occurs in bouts or episodes
of differing duration (4 to 72 hours), which
vary from person to person. No symptoms
are experienced between these attacks.
The frequency and intensity of these
attacks vary greatly from person to person,
and also during their lifetime. This illness
may be caused by an accumulation of
stress and anxiety, trauma, but is more
frequently due to excessive consumption
of analgesics or migraine medication and
may lead to a disabling form of migraine.
33
ENGLISH
Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES/GB:Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES 24/06/08 10:47 Page 33
34
ENGLISH
This is termed “transformed migraine”:
the frequency and duration of the attacks
increase to the point where the pain is
likely to occur on a daily basis. The
Cefaly® is hence particularly useful in
reducing or discontinuing medication
intake and thus preventing this harmful
progression into a disabling transformed
migraine.
Programme 1 is designed to treat the
attack, i.e. the bout of pain. It is applied
when the migraine is already present or,
preferably, when the first signs of the next
migraine attack are felt. It may be repeated
several times in succession during the
bout of pain.
Programme 2 is designed to act as a
prophylaxis. It is also called “endorphinic”
since it aims to increase endorphin
production. This increase in endorphin
levels assists in fighting the principal
mechanisms responsible for migraines.
Cluster headache
The cluster headache is much less common
than migraine. It occurs in 1% of the
population and mainly affects men (80%
of cases). The pain, strictly unilateral and
always experienced on the same side, is
generally located in the orbital and
supraorbital regions. It is accompanied by
a vascular secretion disorder located on
the same side as the pain: conjunctival
injection (red eye), watery eyes and a
blocked nose.
The periodic remission of the bouts
of pain is very specific. This is why this
headache is called “cluster”, which
means “grouped” together. During a period
lasting several weeks, a person will have
at least one attack a day or even multiple
attacks on a daily basis. Each attack will
last between 20 minutes and two hours.
The bouts of pain that last for several
weeks are followed by pain-freed periods
that last for several months or years.
Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES/GB:Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES 24/06/08 10:47 Page 34
The specific period remission of the cluster
headache obviates the need to use the
Cefaly® as a prophylaxis. Programme 1 is
suitable for treating a bout of pain. It is
ideally applied at the onset of the attack.
It may be repeated several times in succession
until the attack is over.
Frontal sinusitis
The Cefaly® may be beneficial in alleviating
chronic bouts of frontal sinusitis.
However, it is only able to treat the symptoms,
not the cause. People who suffer from
bouts of frontal sinusitis must consequently
apply their usual localised pain treatments.
The Cefaly® will alleviate the sensation
of pain and dull headache.
Programme 1 should be used as required
Trigeminal neuralgias
The trigeminal nerve innervates the
entire face and front half of the skull. It
comprises three branches: inferior maxillary,
superior maxillary and ophthalmic. The
Cefaly® only acts on the ophthalmic branch.
1. Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia
The sufferer experiences an extremely
severe, stabbing pain, like an electric
shock, that lasts less than one minute.
This pain is normally in the face in the
area that is controlled by the branch of
the superior maxillary nerve.
In very rare cases, the neuralgia affects
the area controlled by the ophthalmic
nerve, i.e. the eye socket forehead and
front half of the skull. It is only in this very
rare case of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia
that the Cefaly® may be of benefit. A daily
session with programme 1 would substantially
reduce nervous excitability and
hence the frequency of the bouts of pain.

2. Symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia
One or several branches of the trigeminal
nerve may be injured or inflamed for a
number of reasons: vascular malformation,
tumour, inflammation, etc. If it is combined
with a treatment aimed at reversing the
causal factor, the Cefaly® will treat the
symptoms of nerve pain very effectively
when this pain affects the area controlled
by the ophthalmic branch (eye socket,
forehead, front half of the skull).
Programme 1 may be used as required.
Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES/GB:Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES 24/06/08 10:47 Page 36
FUNCTIONAL PRINCIPLE
The majority of headaches and migraines
project their pain onto the forehead and
front part of the skull. This area is innervated
by the upper branch of the trigeminal
nerve (the ophthalmic branch is called
Willis’ nerve). At the base of the orbit it
divides into supra-trochlear and supraorbital
nerves. The Cefaly® electrode is
specifically designed to enable it to
establish contact with these nerves. The
Cefaly® consequently acts on all the
innervation in the area by means of its
electrode, which is the area where most
of the pain associated with migraines and
headaches is projected.
The Cefaly® generates very precise electrical
impulses which permit selective
stimulation of the nerve fibres. As the
impulses are generated very slowly they
are virtually imperceptible at the beginning
of the session. The Cefaly® measures the
impedance of the skin and the stimulation
coefficients of the nerve fibres. The
device uses an electronic feedback
mechanism to precisely adjust the
characteristics of the impulses to the
specific requirements of individual users.
The treatment is consequently very
comfortable as well as efficient and
personalised.

The treatment programme for bouts of
pain generates very high frequency
impulses which stimulate the tactile
sensitivity of the Aβ nerve fibre.
Stimulation of these fibres blocks the pain
messages in the central nervous system
to prevent them from reaching the brain
by means of the mechanism known as
“gate control”.
The prophylaxis programme generates
low frequency impulses that stimulate the
Aδ nerve fibres, which are known as
“discriminative pain” fibres. Stimulation
of these fibres with the appropriate
frequency substantially increases endorphin
production. The endorphins that are released
induce general relaxation and a sense
of well-being. They also regulate the
serotoninergic structures in the central
nervous system, which are abnormal in
patients who suffer from migraines.

1. PRACTICAL USE
Preparing the session
1. Cleansing and degreasing the skin
It is essential to cleanse and degrease
the skin thoroughly before the session to
ensure a good quality skin-electrode
interface. Take a Safetox Prepare™ wipe
(see figure 1) or more water and soap, but
do not under any circumstances use
make-up removal products because they
leave a greasy film on the skin.
Then cleanse the skin on the glabella and
forehead (see figure 2). Pay special
attention to the whole of the area for
positioning the electrode: the main part of
the forehead and between the eyebrows.
This step is essential to ensure that
the electrode grips and the subsequent
effectiveness of the session.

2. Removing an electrode
Remove an electrode from its plastic
support, holding it by one of its two tips
(see figure 3). Do not pull the electrode by
its plastic pin as this could damage it. The
quality of the treatment depends on the
quality of the electrodes. They are designed
to be used 5 times, condition that the skin
has been cleansed thoroughly and
degreased before the electrode is applied.
Electrodes that have been overused lose
their capacity to transmit electronic
impulses and the treatment is consequently
ineffective.
3. Positioning the electrode
Use a mirror to correctly position the
electrode (see figure 4).
Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES/GB:Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES 24/06/08 10:47 Page 40
The pointed part is placed downwards
with the lower edge placed exactly on the
horizontal line that joins both eyebrows
(see figure 5). Press your fingers several
times along the entire surface of the
electrode so that it grips your skin firmly.
The effectiveness of the treatment
depends on the quality of the contact
between the electrode and the skin.

of frontal sinusitis and certain forms of
trigeminal neuralgia.
2. Programme 2
Press the switch twice in succession to
select and start programme 2. You will
hear two successive beeps.
As programme 2 is designed to prevent
headaches and migraine it is used during
pain-free periods.
3. Programme 3

The effectiveness of the treatment
depends on the power used. It is
consequently advisable to wok with the
maximum power possible. The sensations
will feel unusual at first but you will soon
become accustomed to them after a few
sessions. Our limit is purely psychological
as we are perfectly capable of tolerating
the full power of Cefaly®, in other words it
is possible to let it run for twenty minutes
of treatment without restricting the power.
3. Restarting the session before it stops
When the twenty-minute session is over,
there is a gradual decrease in intensity for
thirty seconds. During this phase,
pressing the switch just once will
immediately start a new twenty-minute
session of the same intensity.
This avoids repeating the long initial
phase of increasing the intensity levels
and the treatment continues with an
intensity that is invariably effective.
During the session
1. Conducting the session
The session lasts twenty minutes. The
programme selected runs automatically
and step by step. During the first few
minutes, the sensation is very weak, even
imperceptible. Nothing or almost nothing
is felt as the impulses are very light.
A vibration or tingling sensation then
appears which increases. When this
sensation becomes sufficiently intense,
pressing the switch once will stabilise it.
The power reduces at the end of the
twenty minutes and the programme stops
automatically.
2. Restricting the power
The intensity will gradually increase
during the first 12 minutes of treatment.
When the sensation becomes too intense,
press the switch just once and the power
will stop increasing. The programme
always ends after twenty minutes but the
power remains at the same level until it
stops.
Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES/GB:Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES 24/06/08 10:47 Page 43
44
ENGLISH
Press 2 x : Stop
4. Interrupting the session
To interrupt the session before its
programmed end, just press the switch
twice and the programme will stop.
Pressing the switch once restricts the
power and pressing it twice stops the
device (see figure 8). There is an even
simpler method, however: just lift up the
Cefaly® which will stop at once when it
loses contact with the electrode
(see figure 9).
5. Accidental interruption:
defective electrode
The sophisticated electronic system used
in Cefaly® constantly measures the
impedance of the electrode, skin and
subcutaneous tissues. If the impedance of
these tissues is not compatible with the
treatment, Cefaly® will interrupt the
session automatically.
This spontaneous interruption means that
either the skin has not been cleansed
thoroughly or the electrode has been
positioned incorrectly or is no longer
intact, or may even mean that your head
is not in the correct position or that it has
moved abruptly and unexpectedly.
FIGURE 8
FIGURE 9
Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES/GB:Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES 24/06/08 10:47 Page 44
After the session
1. Removing the device
The session terminates after twenty
minutes and the device automatically
switches off. Lift the main part of the
device to disengage the pin from the
electrode (see figure 9). Next remove the
device and then the electrode. Do no pull
the device forwards without first removing
the pin from the electrode.
2. Detaching and stowing the electrode
Detach the electrode from your skin by
holding one of its tips (see figure 10). Do
not pull the electrode by its plastic pin.
Replace the electrode on its transparent
plastic support sheet. Then stow it in its
bag. Do not leave the electrode uncovered
in a dry place to prevent it from becoming
dehydrated. Once the gel loses its
moisture, its properties deteriorate and
the electrode ceases to be effective.

2. SENSATIONS
The sensations induced by the Cefaly® are
unusual and unexpected. The treatment is
completely safe and there are no adverse
side effects
During the session
• Cefaly® generates electrical impulses
very gradually. During the first two minutes,
either nothing is felt or a slight tingling
sensation under the electrode. A lack of
sensation for one or two minutes does not
mean that the device is not working; it
simply means that the impulses produced
are below the stimulation threshold of the
nerve fibres.
• Tingling sensations are then felt in the
skull, making you feel as if your hair is
standing on end.
• The sensation of vibration or massage
increases and spreads very gradually to
the whole of the forehead and the front
part of the skull. The Cefaly® increases the
power very gradually. After about twelve
minutes, the power stabilises and
remains constant until the 20-minute
treatment session is over.
After the session
• Slight localised tickling sensation may
persist on the skin on the forehead for
around thirty minutes.
• A sensation of lightness and coolness
emanates from the forehead and extends
to the whole of your face. This very pleasant
sensation may last for several hours.
• A deep feeling of rest and relaxation
with an anti-stress effect.
• A very intense sense of well-being
washes over the body. The Cefaly® is the
most effective method of increasing
natural endorphin production. This phenomenon
induces a profound sense of
general well-being.
Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES/GB:Manuel CEFALY 140 x 170 ES 24/06/08 10:47 Page 46
The frequency and timing of sessions
will depend on the indication and the
programme selected.
Migraine and tension
headache: treating attacks
Programme 1 is used once or possibly
several times in succession during a bout
of pain or when the first signs of an attack
are evident. It may be repeated for each
attack and up to six times in one day.
Migraine and tension headache:
preventive treatment
Programme 2 is used once or twice a day
for 6 to 16 weeks until a significant
reduction in the frequency and intensity of
the bouts of pain is felt.
.
When a bout of pain occurs, it may be
treated using programme 1, as described
above. After 6 to 16 weeks of using
programme 2 every day, it is advisable
to reduce the number of sessions to two
a week.
Cluster headache
Programme 1 is used when a bout of pain
has begun and is repeated several times
in succession until the end of the bout.

Frontal sinusitis
Programme 1 is used when required:
generally once or twice a day when the
need is felt.
Trigeminal neuralgia
In cases of secondary neuralgias,
programme 1 is used between one and
six times a day. The amount of use is
discretionary and will vary greatly from
person to person.
In very rare cases of idiopathic
neuralgia where the pain is concentrated
in the forehead, programme 1 is used at
the rate of one session a day. It is repeated
every day or at least three times a week.
Anti-stress and well-being
Programme 3 is designed to induce a
profound sense of well-being and relaxation
or to treat stress and anxiety. As in all
cases, programme 3 may be used in
a targeted or ordinary manner. Targeted
use consists of conducting one or two
sessions in succession, when there is a
need to relax or to treat a stress episode.
Programme 3 may also be used regularly
at the rate of at least 3 sessions a week
and 3 sessions a day maximum to reduce
chronic stress or permanently improve
general health and well-being.

insolito mal di testa che si improvvisa della comparsa dei sintomi;
non deve usare il Cefaly ® e dovrebbe
consultare un medico. Sottolineiamo
l'importanza della ricerca medica
consulenza se il mal di testa è di origine o di recente
è inusuale in natura.

Cefalea a grappolo
